How long can we hold a provisional booking?

Provisional bookings can be held for up to 14 days without a deposit.
A booking can be made over the phone directly to the Adventure Centre in question.

WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND AS LEADER/GROUP RATIOS?

It depends on the type of group. For example a special needs school would normally increase their ratio of helpers. For the majority of groups, a good ratio is one leader for every 10, and then increase/decrease according to circumstances. We would never expect a group to bring less than one leader for every 14 young people to our centres.

HAVE YOUR ADVENTURE CENTRES BEEN INSPECTED, AND IF SO, BY WHOM?

Yes, our centres have regular inspections as part of the terms of licensing under the Adventure Activities Licensing Regulation 1996 (administered by Adventure Activities Licensing Service – AALS).
Our centres have also been successfully inspected to assess their eligibility to become holders of the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge.
Each of our Centres work very closely with their respective Environmental Health Officers to ensure the safe operation of each Centre.
Further to this, we regularly arrange inspections of our facilities and activities by independent auditors, seeking specialist advice and we carry out audits of our facilities.

CAN GROUP LEADERS INSPECT OUR ADVENTURE CENTRES FOR THEMSELVES?

Yes – we actively encourage leaders to organise an exploratory, pre-visit to our centres to familiarise themselves with the facilities and site.

CAN YOU PROVIDE US WITH INFORMATION ON YOUR RISK ASSESSMENTS FOR THE ADVENTURE ACTIVITIES

Yes – we are very happy to do this, and for leaders themselves to carry out risk assessments. For more information please contact the centre you wish to visit.

WOULD MY GROUP BE EXPECTED TO MIX WITH OTHER GROUPS AT YOUR CENTRES?

No (although if you particularly want to this may be possible by pre-agreement with other groups leaders).
Each group has their own self-contained accommodation.
Facilities such as low ropes courses, swimming pools, sports halls and sports fields are pre-booked and not shared.
Instructed activities likewise are booked for each group and are not shared.

WHEN ARE MY GROUP SUPERVISED?

Supervision and instruction takes place on the adventure activities, though you would be expected to involve your own leaders in a supervisory role, and be involved as participants in the adventure activities if you wished.

DO YOU HAVE A CHILD PROTECTION POLICY?

Yes we do. Our policy regulates behaviour of all staff working on centres. We are registered with the Criminal Records Bureau to carry out checks on all staff whose work brings them into contact with children.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I HAVE TO CANCEL?

If you cancel outside of 20 weeks of your stay you would forfeit your deposit. If you cancel within 20 weeks you will be charged 50% of the minimum charge, within 10 weeks 75%, and within 6 weeks 100% of the minimum charge. We encourage groups to take out insurance that will cover in the event of unforeseen cancellation.

DO ADVENTURE ACTIVITIES STILL TAKE PLACE IN THE RAIN?

Most adventure activities have shelters and therefore can take place in most types of weather. Our activity centres supply a kit list, thereby ensuring that groups are able to adequately prepare in advance for their sessions.

What should I advise my group to bring with them on their residential

It is ultimately up to group leaders to advise their groups of what to bring with them on their residential and we recognise that different groups will make different recommendations about items such as spending money.

However, as a general guide we have produced the following kit list which you may wish to download for your group.

What to pack for your Rock UK residential

HOW LONG HAS ROCK UK BEEN RUNNING OUTDOOR ADVENTURES?

Rock UK has been running outdoor adventures for over 90 years. It started in 1922 when a group of Sunday school teachers from London took some children, who had never had a holiday, out of the city to the South coast. Since then a nationwide organisation has evolved out of that simple idea to help children experience some fun and learn more about the outdoors as well as themselves.

CAN I COME BACK TO ROCK UK WITHOUT A GROUP?

At Rock UK we predominantly work with groups, but it is possible for individuals to get involved in adventure through: holiday clubs, birthday parties, attending an organised weekend/holiday for parents and children or attending one of our skill courses. For further information about opportunities to visit Rock UK centres please call us on 0844 8000 222.

HOW DO I KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE I WILL BE CHARGED FOR?

You will be charged for the number of people in your group subject to a required minimum number which varies according to the centre and accommodation booked. Our administrators will ensure that you are aware of the minimum charges for your group at the time of taking your booking. Accommodation and activity groups also have a maximum size which we will inform you of at the time of booking. Please advise us of the size of your group as soon as possible so that we can ensure the most appropriate accommodation is booked and we are able to supply the required number of activity instructors.

DO YOU OFFER ANY SPECIAL DISCOUNTS FOR SCHOOL GROUPS?

Yes, we are pleased to offer 1 free teachers' place for every 10 paying guests when minimum numbers have been reached. This offer cannot be used in conjunction with any other special deal.

CAN I CHANGE MY ACTIVITY CHOICES?

If you wish to change your activity programme we will endeavour to do this, subject to availability. Activities book up a long time in advance, therefore we ask all groups to check programmes thoroughly and inform us as soon as possible if amendments are required.

HOW LONG DO ACTIVITY SESSIONS LAST?

Adventurous activity session last for 1hr 45 mins - 2 hours depending on the session and the centre you are visiting. Spotlight sessions last for 1 hour. Some off site activities can last all day. Please contact the centre of your choice for specific details of session times to develop a programme for your stay.

DOES MY GROUP NEED TO BE A FAITH GROUP?

No. Whilst Rock UK is a Christian charity our centres are open to all school groups whether faith based or secular.

DO YOU OFFER ANY FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR PUPILS WHO MAY NOT BE ABLE TO ATTEND THE RESIDENTIAL DUE TO FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS?

Yes. Rock UK has a limited bursary fund available to assist pupils who may not ordinarily be able to attend their school's residential for financial reasons. Details of the scheme, eligibility criteria and how to apply can be found on the bursary page.
