Spree Central is an annual summer event hosted at Frontier Centre and run in partnership with Urban Saints. We welcomed around 700 adults, teenagers and children onto the site to enjoy a weekend packed full of adventure, activities and bible teaching. The event only happens thanks to the dedication and commitment of a team of volunteers, who support the core team and the event team in the running of Spree.
We asked one of Spree Central’s volunteers about her Spree experiences and why she continues to help make this event happen.
How long have you been involved in Spree and what is your role with Spree Central?
I have been serving as a volunteer on the Spree Central team for eleven years as the Administrator.
Why do you give up your time to help run Spree Central?
I enjoy using my administration skills to aid the process of arranging Spree Central … and my “mantra” always is that, if just one young person comes to know Jesus during Spree, all my input will have been worth it.
What is the highlight of your weekend at Spree Central?
We start accepting bookings in January – so, when Spree comes around, I really enjoy putting faces to names and talking to leaders who I’ve been in email communication in the previous months.
I love chatting to young people who come to Spree and hearing their views about Spree and life in general.
Why do youth groups benefit from coming to Spree?
The Spree team arranges a full programme of activities over the weekend. Everything is arranged for the young people: great teaching, lots of outdoor activities and other activities – there is something for everyone … and, if they have time, the group leaders can relax in the Leaders’ Lounge!
How do our facilities and staff team enable Spree to carry out its mission?
The facilities at Frontier Centre are great – most of our team members and several groups attending Spree make full use of the indoor en-suite accommodation, whilst others enjoy the wide open spaces on site and pitch their tents. Groups can choose a self-catered or catered option at Spree. The Rock UK team do a wonderful job at catering for the huge number of people who choose to have their meals catered for at the centre.
Rock UK staff are fully involved in all Spree planning meetings (which are held every six weeks from January to June) and the post-event review meeting in the autumn.
What words would you use to sum up a Spree Central weekend?
A wonderful opportunity for young people to encounter Jesus in a very relaxed and safe environment.
Will you be back next year?!
Yes – definitely!
We look forward to next year’s Spree events www.urbansaints.org/spree
