Outdoor Classroom Day at Rock UK

On Outdoor Classroom day we welcomed over 500 children across our four adventure centres.

We are proud to join in with Outdoor Classroom Day, a global campaign to celebrate and inspire outdoor learning and play. Thousands of schools around the world take lessons outdoors and prioritise playtime. This year so far almost 2 million children worldwide took part; more than 487,000 of those were in the UK and Ireland.

We think outdoor learning and play is an essential part of a child’s development and education. Spending time outdoors not only benefits their physical and mental health but also provides them with opportunities to develop key skills such as communication, teamwork and confidence.

This year on Outdoor Classroom Day, Thursday 23rd May, we welcomed over 500 children from 13 schools to our four Rock UK adventure centres. We thought we’d share a roundup of their thoughts and some photos of their residential adventures.

Teachers: What are the benefits of learning outside the classroom?

“It’s great seeing the kids outside the classroom and in an environment where they can shine and learn new things together.” Mrs Perrett, Teacher, Bromham C of E Primary School

“The benefits of bringing our Year 6 pupils on residential are huge. The challenging activities really bring out their confidence and the support the children give each other is heart-warming. Having new experiences away from the classroom has allowed the children to acquire new skills and a unique learning experience.” Jo, Group Leader, Monkston Primary

“Children dont realise they are learning – outside the classroom is amazing – learning through physical experiences…  Some children who may struggle academically shine in this environment which is so beneficial for their self esteem. We see another side of their personalities.”  Group Leader, Haven Methodist Primary

Pupils: What are you enjoying the most about learning outside of the classroom?

“We’re not restricted to one area, we have freedom to learn”

“We can face our fears!”

“We can try new fun things that we’ve never done before”

“You can push yourself to try new things”

“It’s a great way to learn after our exams”

“It gives us new experiences in the fresh air with our friends”

Pupils all from Bromham C of E School

What was your favourite activity?

“Rock climbing because the instructor helped and supported me to achieve my target.” Sophie

“Archery because it was fun and challenging. I liked the instructors who helped us play cool games.” Ashton
