Don’t wait for the Outdoor Education Bill – Act Now!

By Steve Hallett, Director of Operations, Rock UK – www.rockuk.org

The introduction of the Outdoor Education Bill by MP Caroline Voaden on 7 July 2026 has reignited an important national conversation about the role of outdoor learning in the lives of children and young people. While the Bill is currently a proposal rather than legislation, at Rock UK we warmly welcome the debate it has sparked and wholeheartedly support its ambition to make meaningful outdoor experiences available to every child.

The Bill recognises something that outdoor education providers, teachers and youth leaders have known for decades: time spent learning, growing and exploring outdoors has a profound impact on young people’s wellbeing, confidence, resilience and development.

But while Parliament considers the future, we believe young people cannot afford to wait.

The Benefits Are Already Clear

Across our centres, we see first-hand the transformational effect that residential experiences have on children and young people.

A few days away from home, immersed in adventure, challenge and community, can achieve what months in a classroom sometimes cannot.

Residentials help young people:
• Build confidence through overcoming challenges.
• Develop resilience when things don’t go to plan.
• Strengthen friendships and teamwork skills.
• Improve communication and leadership abilities.
• Grow in independence and responsibility.
• Connect with nature and the wider world.
• Enhance mental wellbeing by stepping away from everyday pressures.

For many young people, a residential visit becomes a defining milestone in their educational journey – an experience they remember long after they have forgotten individual lessons, exams or assignments.
